LYSISTRATA – the sex strike
July 20 – August 6, 2011, doors open at 7:30pm, curtain at 8pm
Location : Philosopher’s Stage at Philosopher’s Walk , 80 Queen’s Park

by Aristophanes
Adapted by Germaine Greer and Phil Willmott
Directed by Andrea Wasserman

The talented and exuberant group of emergent artists that form Canopy Theatre Company will take to Philosopher Walk’s unique outdoor stage for the 11th year.  This season they explore one of ancient Greece’s greatest comedies, Greer and Willmott’s adaptation of Aristophanes’ hilarious battle of the sexes, Lysistrata. The show will run from Wednesday, July 20 through to Saturday, August 6, 2011.

Known for its bawdy humour, Lysistrata tells the tale of how one woman encourages a nation of lustful ladies to deny their husbands any sexual attention until the men declare peace and put a stop to civil war.  Germaine Greer’s adaptation keeps all of the expected phalli, sexually charged hijinks and anti-war rhetoric while also exploring issues of gender politics and class bias.  Guaranteed to be the sexiest production ever seen on Philosopher’s Stage, Lysistrata comes with a ‘mature content’ warning: This is not a family show!

Philosopher’s Stage at Philosopher’s Walk is located at 80 Queen’s Park, just steps West of the Museum subway station, just South of the ROM, between the Faculty of Law & Faculty of Music buildings, at the University of Toronto.  Philosopher’s Stage can be accessed from Philosopher’s Walk, entering the Walk off of Hoskin Avenue (& walking North).

Longer Workshop Series Description:
Everyone has at least one important story to tell. If your passion is writing, this course can help you to uncover what your story is, and how best to tell it. Should you write fiction, memoir or something else? What serves you better? What serves the story better? What serves the project of your life and dreams better? By focusing on one to three of your stories, this course will help you to glean the real story in the bigger situation. We will discuss and put into writing practice how to merge good story-telling skills with the ongoing projects of creating our selves, and creating our audiences so that we are seen and heard as we intend ourselves to be.

We will also explore...

**When our stories are intensely personal, and while we want to speak out, how can we do so while being true to ourselves and still protecting ourselves?

**How do we tell our stories with all our truth, voices and creativity intact, while writing so that, in this country of many and diverse voices, we are clear and are heard?

**How do we, and when should we, or shouldn't we, balance the need to tell our stories with our families and communities wishes?

**How and when might we intelligently subvert English language writing conventions?

*What is Empower anyway?!*:
Inspired by “Empower: Youth, Arts, and Activism – An HIV/AIDS Arts Activism Manual for Youth by Youth,” this one-year project trains youth to use a community‐arts based approach to HIV prevention and other sexual health issues.
This project was designed for youth, by youth. We believe that youth need sex, queer, and youth positive spaces to learn and talk about sex. We also believe that these spaces should be designed by youth for youth in ways that are community and culturally specific.
Since April, 17 diverse youth have come together to use their stories and experiences to create and deliver arts‐based workshops to their own communities. Participants also created digital stories sharing their experiences as HIV peer educators. And, better yet, we did it together: Every participant was matched with a youth peer education mentor.

This one-year project is a collaboration between Central Toronto Community Health Centres, CATIE, and Gendering Adolescent AIDS Prevention (GAAP). Empower was made possible by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
